ORC Week 8: The Reveal… of a 75% Finished Basement!

Whether you’re new around here or a long-time reader, welcome! My husband Josh and I have been renovating our 1952 home for the past 4 years, almost entirely on our own. We’re tackling the entire basement for this spring’s One Room Challenge (ORC), and it’s the final project we need to complete to call our home renovation completely finished! Over the next 8 weeks, I’ll be sharing the progress of our basement remodel on my Instagram and here on the blog as part of the ORC, a nation-wide event involving hundreds of other designers and home renovators. Be sure to check in on the ORC’s blog page to follow along with all of the other projects going on!

Well, it’s here, friends… the finale of the One Room Challenge! We once again bit off more than we could chew with this project, and unfortunately it’s not completely finished in time for the reveal. That said, it’s been a month of insane progress and we are just weeks away from having it completely finished. We’re still very proud of where we are today!

Today’s update will be brief, with just a few before and present photos to show where we’re at. I’m literally dressed and ready to go to the lake for the 4th of July, so gotta make it quick!

Here were our goals for week 8:

  • prime, paint, and install base cabinetry and countertops- DONE
  • install beverage fridge- DONE
  • buy the closet doors, all trim, and shelving – DONE
  • paint all doors, trim, and shelving – almost done* need to install shelves, and paint doors (they are primed though!)
  • install shower fixtures – DONE
  • install bathroom ceiling – IN PROGRESS
  • paint laundry room floor – DONE
  • install carpet – DONE

As you can see, we accomplished a TON over this last week and a half! The carpet going in made such an amazing difference in the entire feel of the basement. It is so soft underfoot and really gives the basement a nice warm feeling! We got it from ProSource Wholesale and I was super impressed with the amount of options that they had. They helped me arrange installation with one of their preferred installers, who did a great job. Both Josh and I were very impressed with the overall quality of install and what a difference the carpet makes in making the basement finally feel almost finished!

The builtins are installed and I am so excited about how they turned out. We obviously still have to add countertops and shelving, but they already look amazing! They are painted Naval by Sherwin Williams (Naval SW 6244), which is a rich navy. It is beautiful against the marble fireplace surround and the greige carpet, and is a sharp but elegant contrast from the walls that are painted  Extra White by Sherwin-Williams (Extra White SW 7006).

We still have to built the surround for the fireplace as well, but doesn’t it look so amazing already?! Even though it’s the middle of summer, we’re DEFINITELY going to have to turn on the fireplace and sit in front of it when it’s all done… ha! And how about our beverage fridge?! I am in love! The dual temp zone feature is amazing… and I love the wood detail on the shelving. It totally elevates this living room! Build.com had so many options to choose from when it came to these types of fridges, but I am so happy with the one I chose.

The other thing that happened is the BATHROOM install! The vanity, toilet, and shower fixtures are in and I am super excited! We’re still working on the ceiling- it turned out to be a little harder than we expected. I’m thinking I should be able to reveal a completely finished, decorated bathroom to you all next week, so stay tuned! It’s kind of a mess in the photo below, but you get the idea!

Sima Spaces ORC 2020: bathroom remodel in progress

There’s not a ton of work left until this space is completely finished. Here’s what’s left to do:

  • finish installing bathroom ceiling
  • paint all doors
  • install all doors and trim
  • install and paint all shelving
  • build, paint, and install fireplace surround
  • install bathroom fixtures
  • install handrail on stairs

We are going to work super hard in the next week and hopefully get this whole project wrapped up. Unfortunately we didn’t make the deadline for the ORC, but that’s ok! We were willing to take on the challenge, and we did our best! There are so many other amazing projects out there so be sure to go check them out!

I’ll be sure to continue updating you all on our progress, and hopefully have some finished spaces to reveal very soon!
