The two big questions I ask in the initial plannin The two big questions I ask in the initial planning phase of a new project, in this case our upcoming basement renovation:
1) how do I want the space to FUNCTION
2) how do I want it to make me (and others) FEEL

To elaborate on ā€œfunctionā€: Our basement is a pretty small space, at only 13.5’ x 22’. We want to create another living room (with TV, fireplace, and beverage center/dry bar), an ā€œofficeā€ space, and add more storage. As I look around the room, I am envisioning the various ways I could incorporate all of those things.

As I think about the wants and needs for the space, I think about how I want to combine that with feelings. Warm, welcoming, and comfortable are feelings that I strive to achieve in every space I design. Occasionally there are feelings like ā€œfocusedā€, ā€œinspired,ā€ ā€œenergizedā€ that I want to cater to: e.g. in our home gym. In the basement I also want to feel cozy and clean. (This sounds kind of silly but right now I feel cold and dirty when I go down there- so many drafts and spiders 🤣). Capturing those feelings involves developing a color palette, lighting arrangement, material combination (e.g. wool, leather, brick, wood), and well-thought-out layout.

If you feel like you’re not ā€œgoodā€ at envisioning things from the start, try taking pen to paper and writing all of these things down, THEN go into your space and try to envision it all. The more you do this, the easier it will get!

PSA: it can take YEARS to renovate your home and i PSA: it can take YEARS to renovate your home and it is normal to have spaces that sit untouched šŸ‘

We have lived in our home for 2.5 years now and while we’ve renovated the main level, entryway (in progress), and exterior, over half of it is untouched and/or used as storage. You don’t see that very often on IG because it’s really not attractive šŸ˜‚ but I want to make it clear that having spaces that are messy and not-updated is totally normal!! It is easy to play the comparison game on here when you see people’s home interiors and feel under-accomplished for only having a few updated spaces in your home. But the reality is, most people spend YEARS updating their homes.

I’m excited to renovate our basement soon, but just know that our upstairs will still mostly look like this šŸ‘€

What’s a space in your home that hasn’t been touched?

Here they are: our 2023 renovation goals! Some wil Here they are: our 2023 renovation goals! Some will be finished within the first couple of months (here’s looking at you, entryway and ceiling beams). The basement will take up the remainder of the winter and spring. And the exterior projects will carry us through summer and fall!

Quick summary:
1) in the entryway, we are in the process of finishing up a builtin unit. It’s built and just needs to be sanded, primed, and painted, and then is ready to install!
2) we will install stained wood ceiling beams to match our floors on the main level. We’ll have a center beam and 3 adjacent beams on each side of the vault.
3 & 4) we will gut the basement and create a cozy living room with a dry bar, office area, and small storage closet. In the utility/laundry room, we’ll create a shelving unit for storage and improve the laundry room aesthetic.
5) in the backyard, we’ll finish landscaping around the fence, build an outdoor kitchen/grill station, and install a custom railing for the stairs.
6) we have a 2 car garage that we haven’t been able to park in thanks to all of the tools and construction items (there is always a huge stack of woodšŸ˜†) and plan to build a storage shed in the backyard that we’ll use ##and we need to finish the fence so our dog Dexter doesn’t keep going to visit the neighbors 🤣 we are not sure if that will be a DIY or hire out project just yet!

That’s a lofty but I think pretty attainable list since it is spread out over the year. What are you most excited to see? It’s the basement or the entryway builtins for me!!
