Renovator. Designer. Blogger.

Hello & welcome to Sima Spaces! I'm Laura, and I have a passion for all things design, decor, and renovation.

My husband and I are serial renovators, currently working on our second home- a 1961 four story split level (#simasixtiessplit). I'm also a full time RN! For 3 years, I ran my own design business, but decided to put that on hold for the time being- you can't do it all, ya know?!

Look around, leave a comment, and don't forget to subscribe to my emails so you don't miss out!

I figured this is a great chance for a re-introduction! So, hi! 👋 I’m Laura Sima. My husband Josh and I live in a suburb of Minneapolis, MN, with our dog Dexter and cat Percy.

1) We fell into the world of renovations accidentally- we bought our first home in 2016, and we could only afford a fixer upper. I started this IG account back then to chronicle our renovation journey!
2) We have learned as we go. Josh is very handy and has learned how to do electrical, plumbing, structural work, etc. I am not as handy but I have learned a LOT about design, plus some hands-on things like tiling, painting, drywall, flooring etc!
3) Together we fully renovated the interior & exterior of our first home (#ourfiftiesfixerupper), sold that in 2020, and moved into another full reno #simasixtiessplit. Today, we’re about 50% done with this home.
4) I got so many design assistance questions back in 2017-18 that I decided to start my own interior design business. I learned a TON and enjoyed it, but decided to step away from client work back in 2020 to focus on our own home projects.
5) I am a full time RN in a pediatric ICU in Minneapolis. When not working at the hospital or on our home, you can find me walking Dexter, working out in our home gym, or doing all kinds of outdoor activities- gardening, boating, camping, eating/drinking on a patio, skiing, you name it!
6) I emphasize designing with intention, which to me means spending time figuring out exactly how we want to use a space, how we want it to make us feel, how we can maximize functionality, and how can I design it to withstand trends and time. I design with the intent to keep a space relatively the same for years to come, even if it means turning down brand partnerships for a new rug/furniture item/decor item. This not only saves us money, but is better for the environment!
7) I strive to be as authentic as possible, even if it means sharing the not-so-glamorous parts of renovating, and aim to inspire you to create a home that you love!

Thanks for being here! ❤️
Our kitchen is freshly deep cleaned… phew, what Our kitchen is freshly deep cleaned… phew, what a job 🥵 I try and keep our kitchen pretty clean on a daily basis and do a deeper clean every 1-2 months. I finally took a few hours to do an even more intensive clean and wow, it feels brand new!

When is the last time you did a deep clean of your kitchen? Here is your reminder - swipe for a checklist 😉 anything you’d add that I missed?

Kitchen details can be found on Simaspaces.com and sources are linked on my LTK page, both links in my profile🔗
The entryway took almost two full years to renovat The entryway took almost two full years to renovate from start to finish (and truthfully, there’s still a couple finishing pieces left). It seems like it took that long for me to get around to writing the blog post, but when I look back, I guess it was only 3 months- that’s not so bad, huh?! 😆 TODAY on Simaspaces.com, you can read allllll about the entire project from start to finish and get details on just about everything! Including a warning on why you should think twice before DIYing slate herringbone tile!!! 🫣🤣 I’d love to hear your favorite part of the project- lmk in the comments 🤗
We’re finally able to open the windows in the po We’re finally able to open the windows in the porch and it feels so wonderful ☀️ I’ve been slowly deep cleaning each room in our home and most recently focused on the porch. The last step is putting the screens in, which I plan to do today! Here’s to warm spring days and hopefully no more snow 🤞

Oh hello there! 👋It’s been about a month and Oh hello there! 👋It’s been about a month and a half since my last post- it has been a busy spring for us here, and I got a little burned out from IG so took an impromptu break. I took a trip to Cabo with friends and then we took a ski trip out to Colorado. Both were so much fun!!

Today I finally got around to putting away our winter decor and bringing out some spring decor, despite there still being multiple feet of snow in some spots of our yard 😆 I swapped out greenery, candles, pillowcases and a couple decorative items) and it feels like a fresh start. Happy spring!

I don’t have a lot of progress to report on the basement yet- framing is just about done, with electrical coming this weekend. Next up is window & fireplace install!

What’s something fun you’ve done this winter, or are looking forward to this spring?
