How to Install a Gas Fireplace with Tile Surround and Wood Mantel

This post contains material sponsored by Build.com. All design plans, thoughts, and opinions are my own. Our 1952 home did not have a fireplace when we bought it. We’ve gone without one for the time that we’ve lived here, but every fall and winter we find ourselves saying “I wish we had a fireplace!” We

Hello & welcome to Sima Spaces! I'm Laura, and I have a passion for all things design, decor, and renovation.

My husband and I are serial renovators, currently working on our second home- a 1961 four story split level (#simasixtiessplit). I'm also a full time RN! For 3 years, I ran my own design business, but decided to put that on hold for the time being- you can't do it all, ya know?!

Look around, leave a comment, and don't forget to subscribe to my emails so you don't miss out!

I’ve waited a looong time to be able to share of I’ve waited a looong time to be able to share official #beforeandafter pics of the dining room! With the addition of a roman shade yesterday, the dining room is complete ✅ swipe to see the progression of this space!

We started with a boxy space with an 8’ ceiling, exterior sliding glass patio door, floor to ceiling mirrored wall, and no storage. We replaced the floors, the window, swapped out the slider for French doors, vaulted the ceiling, and added a builtin for additional storage. Our vintage oval dining table extends to seat 10!

Later this year we plan to add ceiling beams, and then the entire main floor will be complete 🙌
I just installed the roman shade in our dining roo I just installed the roman shade in our dining room and now can officially ✅ this space off the list!!!

This beautiful striped linen shade adds so much warm texture to this wall. I purchased it from @my_shiessentials on Etsy and would highly recommend!

Pro tip: Measure twice, order once😬😂 One of Pro tip: Measure twice, order once😬😂
One of our summer exterior projects was replacing the shutters on the front of our house. Over the weekend I took off our old shutters, went to hang the new ones and discovered that they were about 2” too short! 🤦‍♀️ so now I get to reorder them and hope that they accept the other ones being returned 🙏

My mistake? Measuring only the window, and not the trim!

Here’s how to *properly* measure for decorative shutters. Don’t make the same mistake I did!

👉width of shutters should be roughly 1/4-1/3 of total window + trim width. Our windows are 42” with trim and I ordered 15” shutters which is actually about 36%, but I’d prefer the shutter on the wider side than narrow.
👉height should be top of trim to bottom of trim. If you have a sill, go from top of trim to sill height. (My mistake was measuring as if we have a sill but we do not!)
👉be sure to measure every window individually, as sizes likely vary especially from floor to floor!

Save for future reference! 🙌

Yes…. Yes it would 😏

(Fun fact: we repurposed two of those mirrors to use in our home gym!)

The photo prints arrived last week, and our dining The photo prints arrived last week, and our dining room is now complete with the exception of 2 things: window shades (which have been ordered!), and a decision about lamps! If you’ve followed along in my stories, you might remember how I’ve been searching for the perfect lamp(s) for the buffet ever since we installed it a month or so ago. I thought I had the perfect rattan vintage lamp from FB marketplace, but it got lost in transit 😫 so back to square one! Today I found these super cute brass + rattan shade lamps at Homegoods and literally ran to grab them in the store 😂 I had also found a single rattan lamp there a couple weeks ago and brought it home to try out while I waited for the marketplace lamp to arrive. The tall cream ceramic lamp is also vintage, and I borrowed it our porch.

I need your help: tell me which configuration/lamp you prefer! 1, 2, 3, or 4?
You don’t need to paint that knotty pine! Our su You don’t need to paint that knotty pine! Our sunroom is one of my favorite places in our home. The knotty pine makes it feel so cozy, day or night. Upgrades like flooring, new doors, lighting, and furnishings can do so much for a space without needing to involve paint or other major changes. It’s our own little sanctuary in our home and feels like a cabin getaway, 5 feet off the kitchen 😆
