Spring 2018 ORC: Week 3

This post was originally shared on my former website, OurFiftiesFixerUpper.com, in April 2018.

In case you haven’t “met” us yet…

For those of you are new to my blog, welcome! My husband Josh and I have been renovating our home since we bought it back in April 2016. We do 90% of the work ourselves, from design to construction to decorating! So far we’ve finished our kitchen, master suite, guest bedroom, mudroom, and living room. This bathroom project is the last major project of our upstairs. This summer we’ll move on to our exterior (new siding, patio, landscaping, fixing up the sidewalk, replacing exterior doors, and adding an egress window), and then next winter we plan to tackle the basement (completely gutting and remodeling!). Needless to say, we have a lot of work ahead of us, so I hope you’ll stay tuned!

If you’re new to the One Room Challenge: this is an interior design event for bloggers/designers/renovators put on by Linda of Calling It Home and House Beautiful, during which participants complete a full renovation of a space in their homes in a short time period. The Spring 2018 reveal will take place on May 10. There are hundreds of talented participants and 20 featured designers which means plenty of inspiration to tackle a project in your own home!

Week 2 Progress

We are slowly but steadily making progress on our hallway bathroom. It’s at a point where I can’t really contribute to the physical labor side of things, but I’ve done plenty of shopping this week!

Josh has been hard at work on the electrical and plumbing. He moved the outlet, the electrical box for the vanity light, added a can light, and rewired the bathroom fan. He also plumbed in the new tub faucet and showerhead. We’re waiting on the vanity to arrive to see if we need to move the plumbing for that or not. Unfortunately, delivery was delayed a few days, so we’ll have to wait a bit longer than we thought. Luckily, it shouldn’t affect our plans all that much for week 3.

In the meantime, we went to our local big-box home improvement store (during a snowstorm!) and picked up the supplies we need for the walls, flooring, ceiling, framing, and tile work. The store runs an 11% rebate every so often so we were able to hit the end of that and get the rebate on our big purchase- we can put that towards our exterior projects this summer!

This week I also bought the tile for the floors, the fixtures such as TP holder, hand towel holder, and towel hooks, and the shower head. I chose the paint color, and am in the process of finalizing the plan for the board and batten walls we’re doing. I also bought a few fun things like new towels and soap pump, but I’m trying to hold back on buying the rest of the decor until we’re closer to the finish line so that I have a better visual of the space.

I created a fun “live” moodboard of some of our finishes though- it’s a great way to see it come together before it actually gets installed. The wall tile will be installed like it’s laid here. Both the wall tile and floor tile will have black grout. The paint color I chose is called “Snowbound” by Sherwin Williams. We’ll have lots of brass accents including these beautiful round knobs and mirror, both from CB2.

To recap, here was our Week 2 goal list:

  • DELAYED: moving plumbing for the new vanity (the new vanity will be larger than the old one, so the drain and supply lines need to be moved a bit)
  • COMPLETE: plumbing in the shower fixtures
  • COMPLETE: adding a can light to the entrance area in the bathroom
  • COMPLETE: moving the electrical box for the vanity light (also moved the outlet)
  • NOT DONE: framing in the new linen closet
  • NOT DONE: laying cement board on the floor for tile and shower walls
  • COMPLETE: buying the rest of the necessities- toilet, bath ventilation fan, hand towel holders, toilet paper holder, etc. (I’m holding back on buying decor for now!)

We finished about half of the list, but the other parts will get added onto week 3. This shouldn’t affect our schedule a ton, because Josh can get it done during the weekend. I’ll actually be able to help again after the walls go up, which should move things along as well.

Week 3 Plans

This week is another that involves a lot of effort on Josh’s end. Once he finishes up the “heavy lifting,” I’ll be able to help again. I work this weekend and next week, but I have a day off in between that I should be able to do a few things.

Our Week 3 goals include:

  • framing in the new linen closet
  • laying cement board on the floor for tile and shower walls
  • moving plumbing for the new vanity
  • hanging drywall on all of the walls
  • patching drywall (taping and mudding)
  • waterproofing the cement board surrounding the shower
  • schedule the date for the tub refinishing company

I’ll be able to help with patching drywall and waterproofing the tub surround on my day off, so it’s up to Josh to get it done this weekend. I’m so excited to see it come together… once the walls go up, we’ll be on the home stretch!

If you missed Week 1 and Week 2, be sure to check them out. You won’t believe what this bathroom looked like before we started demo!!! Also be sure to check out the other participants’ projects– there’s some amazing stuff going on!

Update 7/18: The bathroom is DONE! Check out the finished project here!
